Abstract: Predictions and Forecasts: Past, Present, and Future: Join us as we take a look at the
nature of prediction and forecasting. In addition, we will explore notable historical predictions -- some that
proved accurate, and many others that did not. Attendees will also participate in exercises to develop
forecasts of future breakthroughs projected for the short term (2012) and the longer term (2010+).

Title: "What Really Drives the Economy and the Stock Market?"

Abstract: Most people think consumer spending drives economic growth which then increases company revenues and profits. These increasing profits then drive up companies’ stock prices.
This model or process is technically correct. But, it’s not the complete story so if you analyze the economy and markets using this conventional concept, your analysis of what the economy and markets are doing and why, will often be incorrect. We propose a different analytical process that could benefit the future of your business or investment portfolio.

Title: "The Future of the Minnesota Government and the Federal Government in 2020 and 2030"
Speaker: Bill Peter
Abstract: In the 2010 election, Minnesota changed from a Republican Governor with a Democrat Senate and Democrat House, to a Democrat Governor with a Republican Senate and Republican House. In the Federal Government, the House moved from heavily Democrat to heavily Republican, and the Senate moved from heavily Democrat to slightly Democrat controlled.
Bill Peter has consulted with many companies and elected government officials and will share some of his findings regarding possible, likely, and preferred futures for the Minnesota Government and the Federal Government. This is sure to lead to a very stimulating discussion by the Minnesota Futurists. We will strive for a clear definition of our conclusions, as a basis for our potential individual actions in the political arena in 2012. The Minnesota Futurists is not in the role of taking any political public positions.

Topic: The China Challenge: 2011

Abstract:
Presenter Arnold W. Kwong will discuss the changes and challenges of China in the 21st Century through the lens of effects on American society and futures. As an update and extension of his previous presentation in 2008, the conclusions will be held up and examined in the light of more experience and history.
The conclusions evaluated will include:
· The reality of Chinese consumerism, technology, and money will be distorting for societies based on commodities and demographics.
· Echoes of 20th Century conflicts will continue to cause ripples not manageable by 21st Century politics.
· Resource management for desired objectives will become the political touchstone.
Since October 2010 and into 2011 China is still reducing its holding of US Treasury Bonds. As of March 15, 2011 the holdings stood at US$1.154T (down from a peak of US$1.175T). What are the implications for the US if China ceases to be a net buyer of US Treasuries?
US political and financial officials have been arguing for China to change its monetary policy to change the value of their currency almost since China joined the WTO in 1992. What are the reasons for American politicians to be this much in concert across administrations and policies?

Topic: "Are Innovation and Education a Contradiction?: How can you teach novelty?"
Speakers: Ray Seth
Ray Seth is a retired, "semi-professional" student living in the Twin Cities. He did his graduate work at the U. of Minnesota in statistics, psychology, engineering and medical diagnostics. During his working career, he was VP of Information Technology for three large corporations and owned and operated his own software development and operations research firms. He has been both a teacher and user of sophisticated statistical and mathematical methods and models to solve business and other problems. He recently completed two years of tutorial composition studies an the U. of M. School of Music. During his career, he has created and implemented a number of significant business and technical innovations.
Abstract:
Teaching innovation seems like an oxymoron. How can you teach about creations that have not been thought of yet? Beyond that, how can you come up with and teach a method for producing that "Ah-Ha" experience wherein the unconscious delivers forth a creation? Deductive logic is of no use, in producing creative ideas, since the problems under consideration cannot serve as a postulates from which to derive the solutions. Indirect approaches seem to be required.
